March 13, 2024 The entire Island is a preserve. They are slowly restoring the native bird population. The island is a 90-minute high speed ferry trip from Aukland. View from the island's far shore Robin Tui. The tui is noted for the two feathers on its throat and its ability to imitate a wide range of sounds Fruit dove. This is a very large bird . View of the Aukland skyline. People bungee jump off of the tower! We had a Maori show in the evening since we stayed the night.
Kiritimati (pronounced [kiˈrɪsmæs] was very friendly to visitors. Only 279 passengers were able to land before the tide was too low for the tenders. 221 of us were trapped 5 hours until the tide was high enough to get us off. Kiritimati as seen from space (NASA) London is at the base of the top tooth. Locals kept us entertained while we were waiting. Singers, mostly a capella. Young traditional dancers Boys playing the pipes. They hit the ends of the pipes with trimmed sandals. There were about 20 boys taking turns. They were quite good. One song was Jingle Bells (it was Christmas Island). We collected donations for the children of Fanning Island. They were donated to the children of Christmas Island instead since we couldn't land on Fanning Island.
